An Electrical Warrant of Fitness, commonly called an EWOF or WoEF, confirms that the electrical installation in a connectable vehicle or structure has been inspected and is suitable for continued safe use.
In New Zealand, caravans, motorhomes and other connectable installations need a current EWOF before they can be connected to a 230V external power supply. This includes connecting to power at places such as holiday parks, campgrounds and other sites providing electrical supply.
An EWOF is valid for four years from the month it is issued. Keeping it current helps you meet New Zealand electrical safety requirements and avoid problems when connecting your vehicle or structure to power.
Maximum Electrical's Registered Electrical Inspectors can carry out the required inspection and, where the installation meets the requirements, issue the EWOF and identification sticker.
An EWOF inspection assesses the 230V electrical installation against the applicable New Zealand requirements, including AS/NZS 3001 for caravans and other recreational vehicles. Depending on the installation, the inspection can include checks of:
Checking RCDs, circuit breakers and protective devices.
Checking fixed wiring, switches and socket outlets for damage, deterioration or other issues.
Checking the external power inlet and connection equipment.
Checking the installation is safely earthed and bonded.
Checking relevant 230V components for safe operation.
Identifying damage, deterioration or electrical issues that could affect safety.
Where applicable, considering solar, inverters and other connected electrical systems.

A caravan or motorhome that connects to an external 230V electrical supply needs a current Electrical Warrant of Fitness. WorkSafe states that a valid EWOF is required before connecting a caravan, motorhome or other relevant vehicle to power.
An EWOF is valid for four years from the month of issue.
An EWOF must be issued by an authorised person. NZMCA states that a current Warrant of Electrical Fitness can only be issued by a Registered Electrical Inspector.
For caravans and other recreational vehicles, the electrical installation must comply with the applicable requirements of AS/NZS 3001. WorkSafe identifies AS/NZS 3001 as the relevant standard for these connectable installations.
If issues are identified, the inspector can explain what needs to be addressed before the EWOF can be issued. Any required electrical work should be completed by an appropriately qualified electrical worker, followed by the required inspection.
A current EWOF is required before a caravan or motorhome can be connected to a 230V power supply. Individual parks may also have their own requirements, so it's worth checking with the park before travelling.
If the caravan or motorhome is not being used as a connectable installation and is not connected to an external 230V power supply, an EWOF may not be required. However, if it is being connected to a 230V supply, electrical safety requirements still apply.

No. A standard vehicle WOF and an Electrical Warrant of Fitness are different inspections.
An EWOF can only be issued by a Registered Electrical Inspector authorised to carry out the required electrical inspection. A garage or mechanic who carries out your vehicle's WOF cannot issue an EWOF unless they also have the appropriate electrical inspection registration.

Inspections are available within 30 km of our yard in Waiuku, making it convenient to have your caravan, motorhome or other eligible installation inspected at its location.
